She now has news that one of her sixth form friends has tested positive, the first in her school (which is in Berkshire). It's almost certain that she caught it from her boyfriend, who is in his first year of university in Birmingham. He came home last weekend as he was feeling homesick and wanted to see his girlfriend, his family and his old school friends. That's perfectly understandable, I did the same thing when I was a first year student. However, the day before he came home he was Covid tested as there were a number of positive cases in his hall of residence. Stupidly (you can say the again), rather than staying in isolation and waiting for his test result he just returned home.

So the consequence of a student getting infected in Birmingham is an entire school bubble in Berkshire now getting involved in track and trace, with the certainty that some of the pupils and perhaps teachers will have to self-isolate pending tests. The guy's girlfriend has tested positive, and his mother started to show symptoms on Friday, was tested Saturday and I believe is currently waiting for the result. My niece didn't spend much time this week with her friend who tested positive, but she had some contact so was also tested on Friday and is waiting for the result. I spent the evening at my sister's house last Wednesday, including helping my neice with a homework problem she was having, so now I am waiting for advice from St George's Hospital in South London whether I should attend tomorrow for my latest blood tests for the Oxford Vaccine Trial. My girlfriend teaches at a primary school in West London so is also seeking advice from her headteacher about whether to self-isolate and get a test. Neither of us have any symptoms, but that's no guarantee we're not infectious.

All this from a student infection in Birmingham. No amount of angst or hand-wringing is going to alter the fact that you can't contain the virus. Not in ivory towers, not in care homes, not in hospitals, not in schools, nor out of any of those venues either. As somebody wrote quite pithily earlier in the summer, 'the virus is going to virus'. The virus is doing just that, anywhere there are people who are breathing.

The level of denial I'm reading on this part of the Dibb about what's going on I find truly staggering. It seems to me that we can choose to get in front of the curve, or we can choose to deny the virus will virus and watch it spread. Either way, measures to mitigate the spread of the infection will be put in place, that is simply a political inevitability. The only choice is how severe those mitigation measures need be, and whether they are restricted to specific regions or the country as a whole.

Anyway, thanks for all the fish.
That's actually a very good example of how it moves around, rather scary but very relevant
My granddaughter is in her 3rd year so homesickness is very much a thing of the past.

Yet as a Cancer patient in remission who has to be monitored due to an aggressive Cancer, my MRI was left for quite a while, loads of Cancer patients were forgotten about, blood tests were a lottery, heart patients like my friend are still waiting to be seen... Ö.

I am sure this is happening in lots of places only in some cases there will be larger bubbles, in halls or houses.
Halls of residence tend to give priority to first years and most are six bedroom units sharing a kitchen and lounge . Itís the students in that kind of setup who want to be responsible but have flat mates who arenít I feel for . They are stuck and at risk.

Are you getting Jonathan Van-Tam muddled up with Jean-Claude Van Damme?

It must be a post code lottery again as blood tests, scans and consultant appointments all going ahead here. I think it's easier to see a consultant than a GP at the moment. (Mind you it's easier to see a unicorn than a GP to be honest).

Which is why we want to keep Covid-19 infection rates low to ensure these people are now seen in a timely manner.

You seem to be trying to pick an argument with someone who agrees with you.

Wouldn't nightingale hospitals ultimately be staffed by workers from 'normal' hospitals who would then no longer be available to treat those other serious health problems?

must be, all operations are being cancelled round here, chemo stopped, blood tests cancelled... its an utter disgrace. But Covid, first in the queue.

I think it's more a case now of the National Covid Service rather than the National Health Service...

I am not picking an argument, but I feel Cancer, Heart problems and everything else comes way before CovidÖ even Flu.

I am sure if I had been diagnosed now, due to the growth of the Cancer, I would have been long gone. I feel so much for Cancer sufferers now.
