For any of the smart features to work you first have to connect your tv to your network either with a cable or via wifi. I would suggest you do this as that is how you can get a lot of your catch up channels for free. But when it comes to specific apps like Alexa you have to actually signup to them and configure them on the TV, so you can chose not to do this. On LG TV's the alexa app has to be downloaded as well.

Thanks everyone, we’re hoping to get an Oled or QLed tv max 50 inches, I think this limits our choice as well, great to know we won’t have to have Alexa live so to speak x
