Thanks so much to those who advised me, I managed to get the bulbs to work, my boys will be so happy when they come home, they were so disappointed their magic colour lights didn't work when I bought them haha. Think I will buy some more

There are 2 main types of bulb . Those which connect direct to wireless and those that need a zigbee hub (Phillips). Depending on brand depends on how you set them up. But generally you have to download the brand app first then its generally simple to set them up. Once set up you then have to add the skill to alexa , again simple.
My advice is stick to the same brand if you can to minimize number of apps, not really a problem if you have multiple (i go with the best offer at the time).

I will just add we had a ikea tradfri and it burnt out in under a year, so not sure i'd buy any more of those.

When looking at bulbs consider what you need , brightness (lumins), dim able, colours, don't pay for colour if your not going to use it.
Also maybe consider wifi sockets to convert your existing lamps.
