Manchester Airport Changes

We flew from MAN today. We chose to do online checkin as we had no bags to drop and had a lounge booked at 7am. However we were not allowed through security until three and a half hours before. We saw lots of other people being turned away and being told to come back later! When we asked the virgin desk they said that a deal between VA and MAN meant they would only let us through 3 hours before, but actually we were let through 3 hrs 30 minutes before! It was so confusing 🫤
Does anyone know why they do this now?

Probably trying to control the amount of people going through security - MCO also has that but I don't know that they are strict about it.

It's to limited the number of people airside. If everyone turned up 4 or more hours early there would be just no room. It very busy as it is.

I never book a lounge but personally think they should let those with lounge bookings through at least 4hrs before flight so they have time to enjoy the 3 hours lounge time they paid for.

Its also nothing worse at airports where you turn up on time, being told you cannot checkin yet/go through security only to then end up in a massive queue so you then have no time to eat/shop but have to go or run straight to gate. Happened to me several times and it riles me up haha. I want to take my time and leisurely walk to my gate, look at the things in the shop (ending up not buying anything). Its part if the holiday ritual.

And also MAN is THE worst airport (and I live around the corner)

Not Virgin, but I did travel with Easyjet through Manchester last week.

Turned up at T1 car park for 0500hrs for my 0700hrs fight. I had a text saying my flight had in fact been delayed til 1130hrs due to a technical issue.

Anyhow, I parked up and tried to walk through fast track security approx 515hrs ish. I was turned away saying that they would not let me through until 0715hrs at the earliest.

Not sure what they were expecting me to do.

I ended up at the Radisson Blu for a coffee, walked over to T2 and booked a flight out with Air France instead. Used my very generous 6 pound easyjet voucher at San Carlo on breakfast and had a few coffees in T2.

Manchester- whilst the new T2 is pretty nice, the customer service ethos at that place is often awful. Many airports are nowadays. They see their customers as the airlines paying the fees, the actual flyers, they are an inconvenient money cow, to be milked.

Possibly to prevent over crowding, if flights are delayed the number of passengers increase.
People arriving early a few years ago just added to the queue.

They need more landside food option like MCO

MCO often stop people joining security when the queue is long. They put messages up on screens and turn people away

Just to add to my original post, it got very crowded at security with people being turned away and told to wait. The problem is ‘no communication’. Airline should make it clear you won’t be able to go airside until a certain time so people can eg book lounges for the appropriate time. Also there is nowhere to sit so everyone was just congregated in one area waiting… very disorganised. However, I’m hopeful once all the updates have finished to T2 it will be better.

It’s not 3 hours of lounge access but 3 hours prior to flight departure….
