Missed this thread earlier - it's standard when flying between the US and UK that all airlines need a scan of your passport to make sure all the details on it match your booking. It's a government requirement.
There are several possible places this can be done - the airline's app, the check-in desk, the automatic check-in kiosk, the airline lounge (if you have access), or the gate. There is generally no problem with doing it at the gate - I'm surprised you were told off, unless you waited until boarding time to do it. Usually they make announcements well before boarding to call up the people who still need to do the scan. Flying BA from Heathrow, you will not be allowed through security until you do the scan. This is not the case with other airlines/airports. Personally I prefer doing it either in the BA app or at the automatic check-in kiosk. |

We always fly hand luggage to the US and 99% of the time with BA. You don’t queue at check in to have your passport and ESTA/Visa checked, you go to the specific desk in Heathrow/Gatwick. There is one each end of T5 and it will say passport/visa check above it. I’ve only ever had to queue behind one person in all the times I’ve been through there.
As above, you can have it done at the BA lounge too. I’ve never got as far as having it checked at the boarding gate because the one time I didn’t do it at the initial desk, the lounge desk did it for me. Coming back from the US I normally go to the BA desks and explain to the first staff member I see before you line up that I am hand luggage only and just need my passport checked and I’m sent to the shortest line to do this. When leaving MCO I go to the Clubworld desk and have been at most third in line. Generally there is no line there at all. It’s never an issue coming home as they are returning you home and do t need to worry about ESTA, visa etc. |
