Autumn hedgehog

So yesterday we noticed a hedgehog 🦔 back and forth in our garden from one place to the other constantly with leaves in its mouth. So assume it’s building a nest for hibernating for winter.

It was during the day but it’s a good looking weight, looks healthy looking like it’s just building a nest so not worried about it being out in daylight currently. Haven’t seen it today at all in the day.

We’ve got some hedgehog food today and DH is going to put a feeding station together tomorrow so it has protection for its food and water that we will put out.

Is there anything else we can do coming up to winter? We’ve only ever had hedgehogs and hoglets in spring/summer before.

It’s obviously found an area it’s looking to hibernate in so don’t want to change that by doing anything that will affect that.

Love seeing them around so want to help them as much as we can.

As I say we have luckily had them before but in spring/summer.

How lovely- you are really honoured for them to choose to be near you! I would do the same, maybe RSPCA may have some information on how you can help them or local wildlife trust?

Oh wow, that is a chonky little hog.
How adorable.
Love that you are going to prepare a feeding station too, that’s really lovely of you and your husband.
I only get squirrels that dig in my grass and wind my dog up 😒

What a healthy looking hedgehog! We have visiting badgers so only get the occasional hedgehog passing through. Sounds like you're already doing the right things for it. Maybe just keep an eye on how often its out during the day.

lovely... we bought a hedgehog house and put it out filled it with hay and put food near it. but this year I've not seen any in our garden for the first time in years. I did find 1 last December in the day time. I phoned our local wildlife rescue and they said to bring it in to be checked over. unfortunately 1 of it's legs had been severed and was badly infected, so had to be pts

If you are able to look up Hedgehog Cabin on Twitter or whatever it’s called now, Pauly, the lady who runs this wonderful hedgehog rescue knows absolutely everything you could wish to know about hedgehogs, what (and what not) to feed them, how to set up feeding stations, local hedgehog rescues etc. Usually if they are out during the day it’s a cause for concern.

We have two regular visitors who have hibernated very early this year, last year they didn’t disappear until early December.

We saw a hedgehog in our back garden this evening, for the first time in 20 years living here. There’s space under our shed that would make a good place to hibernate, so I wonder if it was checking it out.

I saw a hedgehog on the pavement near my house this evening. Wondered what it was until I got close enough to see. It's been years.

Hope no badgers round here

I would say only put enough food out to supplement its natural diet and not as a replacement. Hedgehogs are greedy little things and will hoover up the lot.
If they get too ‘round’ they can’t curl into a ball and are more susceptible to predators.
Before DD became a vet she did a ton of work experience. Some of this was at a wild animal rescue Centre. They had a lot of hedgehogs that had been injured because they were too fat to roll into a ball when needed. Her job was to pop them in a tray of water to give them physical therapy to lose weight. Like boot camp for hogs.😂😍
