I agree with this completely. It’s sad to me that people actually think this way.
I grew up with both parents having alcohol dependency issues and mental health issues. I also have a brother who is schizophrenic. My mum worked for sixty hours a week for over twenty years and then had a huge breakdown and had to stop working completely. She isn’t lazy, she’s just broken because of trauma she went through. It breaks my heart to think that when my brother was going through his psychotic break that people could look him in such a negative way, but they probably did and I know some people do still give him dirty looks because he has Tourette’s, they assume he’s on drugs. I had a traumatic start to life and I’ve had issues with mental health myself and sometimes I’ve found hitting the bottle very tempting. Things could all go very differently for me one day and I could break like my parents did. Just because I haven’t so far that doesn’t mean I’m any better than anyone else. I hold down full time work now but that doesn’t mean I don’t find it hard getting up some mornings. Stay humble always, no one is immune from hardships and their own mind. |

I work in addiction services. I hear peoples stories. You are wrong.
What is weak and lazy is taking no time to have any empathy or compassion and saying the same old thing every time. Society is decaying because too many people like stopped caring and blamed and judged instead. Edited at 03:40 PM. |

I'm not "making excuses for poor behaviour", merely asking that instead of making such a sweeping statement that all street drinkers are weak, lazy and make poor life choices (sure, some can be put in this category) that you consider that as well as those you are referring to, there are lots of others there through no real choice of their own.

So like abortion, religion and taking children out of school this will be another argument that I refuse to be involved in because I will never change anyone mind.
BUT I have worked and volunteered for many years with people less privileged, I have worked in homeless shelters here and in the USA. Anyone, anyone can become a 'Street drinker'. We are all just a few knock from the bottom. Death, redundancy, divorce, addictive personality, mental health issues, physical health problems, isolation. If you can see that then you have a problem not me. That's it I'm done, I won't change your mind you won't change mine. |

Similar topic yes. Show me where I was bragging? Just commenting. Not been lucky in my life and suffered considerable trauma as a child and made very good decisions, I work extremely hard and save very hard is why I have been able to fly upper. Flew upper class 3 times now and bid for it rather than pay outright and paid cheap money for it. I grew up on the poorest council estate in south London with a terrible ‘family’ I’m sorry if I find street drink and shoplifting unacceptable and don’t automatically look to make excuses for them

I dealt with general crime and those committing it for the first 10 years of my career in the Police, much of it in a ‘volume crime unit’. My thoughts are very much with the ‘real victims’ of what are Criminal Offences, namely the Sales Staff who have to tolerate it and the Customers who then have to pay for the stolen items through increased prices within their own shop.
People commit petty crime for a number of reasons and this becomes apparent both through interview and a study of antecedent information relating to that individual offender. I would agree that many are in fact incorrigible rogues who struggle to recognise the criminality of their actions, but it would also be both wrong and unfair to label all such petty offenders by stereotype. Some are where they are because they know no better, having been brought up in socially deprived areas where theft is barely recognised as crime. Some have been the victim of poor parenting resulting in a failure to differentiate between right and wrong. Some have started life well, but for various reasons, some not of their own making, fallen into hard times and desperation. Some have mental health issues that have never been addressed or if they have, inadequately. There are many other groupings within the Petty Crime fraternity. It would be both wrong and inappropriate to simple mass stereotype all petty offenders. I would agree however that many people are just morally bankrupt, having met many of them over many years.. Yes, Alcohol and Drug addiction was a frequently recurring issue for many.. and for many, varied reasons. I simply count myself fortunate to have had good parenting, an adequate, albeit lacking any continuity education, made reasonable choices, had good luck, continuous employment and yes, worked bl**dy hard through my life.

You’ve raised this topic before and then brought up the fact that you also had childhood struggles and that you’ve done well for yourself.
As I said in my post further up, I too had childhood trauma and grew up poor in a rough area. I now have a good job, good husband, a nice house and nice holidays. That doesn’t mean that I condemn those that don’t. Some of us got lucky, some of managed to “deal”’with our past in a way that has allowed us to have a good future but not everyone is that fortunate and that certainly doesn’t make them weak or lazy. Life can go always go one way or another and it’s not always down to choice. I’ll always remember where I came from and I respect those that are battling with their demons because battling with your own mind is often one of the toughest things. |
