Reading this thread made me think of Harry Enfield’s obnoxious character, think I’d rather spend the day with the street drinkers

A bit like the older generation complaining about the young, I suspect you can go back through history and find people taking about how any particular society was in decay.

Well you kind of beat me to it but I was coming on to say that many many years ago (more years than I care to admit) I worked as a Saturday girl in Marks and Spencers. We told back then not to confront shoplifters and if someone tried to rob our tills (this was when every section had its own till) we were to hand over the money.

You're quite right, even just a generation ago this was happening.
I remember, as a child, walking under the "Hole in the Road" (a huge roundabout which had a massive hole in the middle of it so you could see underground, which had pathways leading underneath the road for pedestrians to safely cross - difficult to describe it really ) with my parents on a Saturday afternoon. There would be a couple of street drinkers listening to the skiffle band, singing along and watching the elderly lady who hoiked her skirt above her knees to jig away to the music. My parents always, without fail, commented that the world was going to wrack and ruin and it was much better in their day.

I work in retail and shoplifting is a daily occurrence , has been for a long while in store I work, wouldn’t say street drinkers but definitely people on drugs and they shoplift to order for a few quid to score drugs….been told that in past by actual shoplifters, they have no shame some of them. It’s coming up to silly season where they run in and grab, I’ve known them pile trollies high leave by fire doors into waiting cars and vans.
I work with people who don’t have a pot to piddle in and worry about Xmas for their kids but they wouldn’t stoop to this level. They know nothing will come if it, you can ban them but they come back in after a bit , I’ve also known staff chase after them as they run out of the store….not me I get minimum wage not danger money you don’t know if they are armed or violent….that said if I suspected a shoplifter I would always report what I saw to a manager or security…..yes we have security…..that’s not much of a deterrent to your serious shoplifter |

There are three individuals that frequent our local retail park and they are very intimidating, especially when it’s quiet and you are on your own.
One walked out of M&S with an armful of stuff the last time I was in. The lady working there said it’s a regular occurrence and they know just to let them as they have been threatened in the past. I don’t care how many issues someone has, or how traumatic their upbringing but this is not ok. Intimidating and being threatening to people (mostly women) going about their business and doing their job should not be happening. |

Horrendous and heartless comment; labelling all street drinkers, some (maybe many?) of whom will have addiction or health issues as weak and lazy.

My daughter manages a Greggs. She tells us daily of the scumbag thieves who come in and laugh in hers and her servers faces as they fill bags of food. She says this is rarely drunk people but more likely gangs of either kids aged from around 10 upwards or older people who have gotten used to seeing the likes of Greggs as a free meal for them and their pals.
She also told us the people who do this are getting more aggressive even when the staff say nothing. What happens, and this can be seen in society as a whole I think, is that when scumbags thieves like these see people doing nothing to stop them they get braver and more aggressive in their actions. Just the other day one lad kicked the stand over with cookies for no other reason than because he could. I would also just say, my daughter and her staff could not give one rats ass whether these scumbags are drunkards, druggies or just di@kneads doing what di@ckheads do and nor should she. She as a manager of a shop should not have to take on the worries and concerns of how someone was brought up or what problems they have suffered when growing up. She is a young woman trying to raise her child the best she can in a world where people are more concerned with worrying about how someone became a criminal than the staff of the shop these incidents occur in. I know where my concerns lie and it ain’t with any drunk, drug addict or di@khead.
