Honestly, Nanna it is awful. She manages the one on the quayside along from the law Courts. It is like the Wild West at times. Some people honestly see Greggs as a free food store and just help themselves.

Just 6 weeks ago one lad drove into the shop on his scooter. Grabbed a load of food and sped off. Customers and staff were left totally shocked and shaken. How on Earth are staff supposed to handle that?

She also told us the people who do this are getting more aggressive even when the staff say nothing. What happens, and this can be seen in society as a whole I think, is that when scumbags thieves like these see people doing nothing to stop them they get braver and more aggressive in their actions. Just the other day one lad kicked the stand over with cookies for no other reason than because he could.

I would also just say, my daughter and her staff could not give one rats ass whether these scumbags are drunkards, druggies or just di@kneads doing what di@ckheads do and nor should she. She as a manager of a shop should not have to take on the worries and concerns of how someone was brought up or what problems they have suffered when growing up. She is a young woman trying to raise her child the best she can in a world where people are more concerned with worrying about how someone became a criminal than the staff of the shop these incidents occur in.

I know where my concerns lie and it ain’t with any drunk, drug addict or di@khead.
This sums up my thoughts exactly, all the do gooders out there defending the actions of the poor individual who thinks it’s ok to clear a shelf 🤷 are you serious, not one concern mentioned for the poor worker who’s probably getting paid no more than minimum wage, doing the right thing and contributing to society.

I’ve read some carp on here before; but seriously, think about the consequences of the actions, put the victims before the offender; don’t make defending the offender your first priority because never in a million years should they be.

Mental problems, ptsd whatever, yes they need help there is still right and wrong, the wrong should never be defended before the wright is supported in any case.

These theives never even get arrested yet a post on Facebook gets custodial, broken Britain.

Puta few shoplifters in prison for a long time and it will stop just like it did with the rioters

I saw on facebook today that two people were arrested for shoplifting in our town centre today after months of reports from numerous stores about these individuals. It’s ridiculous that people are getting away with these acts, that they think it’s acceptable behaviour no matter what their background or circumstances.

I assume they think it’s a victimless crime because they’re too shortsighted to see the impact it has on workers, businesses, high streets and shopping centres.

Sadly I don’t expect it’ll do much to stop these individuals, I’m sure they’ll be back to their thieving ways in no time.

We had a nice Co-op store at the top of our road, it had to close in the end due to constant thefts, they’d hire security guards but they weren’t allowed to physically stop them so it didn’t improve things. Staff were threatened and sometimes attacked. Totally unacceptable to be expected to put up with that at work. Now everyone loses out as it’s gone.

I used to work in quite a rough ASDA back in the mid 00s and people stole vodka bottles etc by hiding them in coat pockets.

Now you go to that same ASDA and I’ve seen people literally just brazenly walk out with a trolley full of alcohol and if stopped they threaten the staff horrendously. They know nowadays there isn’t much consequences.

My husband works in Asda part time (he couldn't stand retirement) and in the evenings they have teenagers riding bikes up the people mover into the store grabbing stuff off the shelves.
These kids are not drunk, not addicts they look very well dressed and well kept, they just have no idea of how to behave at all.
If you try and confront them they turn really nasty and when a security guard stopped one of them she was accused of assault.
This is not right and we need to do something to bring back manners and discipline.

I don't think anyone on here, certainly not me, have defended any of the actions of the individuals referred to in the opening post. We have merely pointed out to the op that their sweeping generalisation that all street drinkers are that way because they are weak and lazy and have made bad life choices is offensive to those who have found themselves in that situation through no choice of their own.

In my nearest city the street drinkers we have, amongst others, are 2 ex-soldiers (PTSD), 1 ex-police officer who had a breakdown and 1 woman in her late 30s/early 40s who had a breakdown when her child was removed as she could not protect him from his violent father - the violent father who was also a very close relative of hers who had been abusing her for a number of years. Does this mean they have the right to steal, verbally abuse or assault others with impunity? Absolutely not. Does this mean they are weak and lazy and have made bad life choices? Again, absolutely not.

I have huge sympathy for anyone who is assaulted or made to feel afraid just through doing their job; it should not happen. I take my hat off to those who do customer facing roles in the world we live in today.

For what it's worth, I believe that anyone who perpetrates this kind of behaviour should be dealt with by the law no matter how they came to be this way, and the laws certainly need to be toughened up but I think that's a whole other thread.
