Compressed working is great when it works and remember by law everyone has the right to ask regardless of reasons. Mine is because I commute between Bristol and London so have 3hrs or so a day travelling, on average I am out of the home from 5am to 8pm Tues to Fri

... although I am contracted for 37 hrs over 4 days, last year I worked over 400 unpaid hours overtime during Mon to Fri so I do have to also be flexible.

I don't formally track my weekend working but for example I know I have worked 17hrs since 8pm on Friday when I got off the train and I will work today and Monday without pay.

Since the beginning of the year I have had weeks booked leave cancelled with no compensation as it's in February.

The Civil Service is brilliant for flexible working but does claim its pint of blood in return.

[QUOTE=Lell;14248000]I work for the NHS in Scotland and we get 8 public holidays, 2 at Christmas, 2 New Year, Friday and Monday at Easter, 1 in May and 1 in September.[/QUOTE

Do the public holidays differ across NHS Scotland? I’m NHS Tayside and I’m sure we get 10 public holidays. Greater Glasgow get 10 PH’s too. On top of PH we get 29 days, then an additional 2 days after 5 yrs and an additional 2 more after 10 yrs. It’s a lot of holidays IMO, way more than DH gets (and his employees).

never heard of that one .

Presumably though the employer can just say "we've considered it but it doesn't fit in with the business's needs so I am afraid we cant offer it " ?

True after 26 weeks service, a relatively new thing. The business can definitely turn it down but they need to give one of a specific set of reasons, so they would need to say why it wouldn’t suit the business needs.

Before I worked in public sector I worked for a small agricultural company which was a subsidiary of a larger company. We weren’t allowed holidays from mid June until September. I don’t think I was given more than a couple of weeks holiday and the occasional bank holiday. When I went to the public sector I was over the moon at getting 30 days straight away plus all public holidays.

They need to give a reason with evidence as per ACAS guidelines
