I cannot believe how many days some people get
Our place standard is 22 plus bank holidays
It does go up so this year after 15 years service I am now on 26 days and thought I was doing really well
How do people get 9 or 10 bank holidays when there are only 8 ?

Every time someone mentions public sector with regard to pay and benefits I get shocked even more at how ' the other half' live

I seriously need to consider getting a job in the public sector as I approach thinking of retirement.
I just get the impression , rightly or wrongly , that people ( as a massive generalisation I know ) don't work as hard even when they are there as private sector people , let alone the perks.
Yes I am jealous and bitter

I know... I get 28 days including bank holidays pro rata (I work very part time). Which means that this year I have to use 4 of my days for days I might not want to take off, just because we shut on bank holidays.

Some civil service positions - I used to be in one - got up to 10.5 days bank and privilege holidays. We got a half day for Maundy Thursday, a day for the queen's birthday and a day for Christmas Eve - was lovely... (I also had 30 days on top of that and after 20 years service got an extra 5 days as a one off.)

Maundy Thursday and Christmas eve are no longer given to new entrants, but those who had them when they started have an extra 1.5 days annual leave.

Why would you think public service don’t work as hard? I work in a school. Yes I get a lot of holiday. I don’t get paid for it though. But I can assure you when I’m at work, I work very hard. Public service budgets have all been cut. Most people are doing the work that 2 people were doing previously. Police numbers have been cut. NHS workers are seriously over worked. DH works in the council offices. Same story there.
Public sector have had no / tiny pay rises for years.

I think everyone alway thinks the grass is greener.

Yep, you're wrong. Ive worked in both private industry (fresh food manufacturing, incredibly difficult) and am currently in the public sector - I, and 99% of my colleagues, work incredibly hard. We all work over our contracted hours, with no facility or expectation of paid overtime. Added to that the pressure of decisions we make /work we produce potentially impacting the entire country!

I get 25 days plus bank holidays and they give us the 3 working days between Christmas and New Years off. I can also buy up to 5 days extra leave per year, which I do.

I've always been pleased with that!
