Depending on who you bank with there may be a decent fixed rate regular savings account. I have one with HSBC which on £250 per month gives me 5% and the money is locked away for 12 months

Thank you I will have a look at the yearly subscription. I need to get in the way of getting a delivery weekly. We have fallen into the habit of nipping to our local shop which is expensive and a 20 mile round trip.

Re: your shopping habits

Have you considered online shopping, that way you're not tempted when browsing and can keep a tally as you go.

Also, do you live near Costco or a wholesale meat market? If so you can bulk buy meat at around half the supermarket cost (and better quality) to freeze.

You can also get good quality Ziploc bags fairly cheap from Costco for freezing the meat and also for pre-prepared meals.

Also with Costco you can get loo roll very cheap and if your kids are the right age Pampers nappies are really cheap

I have the delivery subscription too but now do smaller more frequent £40ish shops rather than one big one (usually works out about every 4 - 5 days, food is fresher and we are wasting less planning meals only a few days ahead.

Another tip is to keep a savings jar by the front door, when everyone gets home empty pockets and purses of most of your loose change and throw it in the jar - surprising how quickly this mounts up and you don't really notice it.
I have also set us a weekly spending budget based on what we had been spending day to day previously, and challenged us to see how much we could each save each week at the end of the week anything we have saved goes in the holiday fund, and we keep a chart to see who the super saver of the week is as a bit of an incentive.

I like that idea as we do bin a lot of food which always makes me feel so guilty. it's such a waste.

I love that idea.. plus I think it will make saving fun. We very rarely use cash its always our card. On Monday I am going to give us all cash and see who spends the least.

Definitely have a look at if there are any monthly outgoings/subscriptions you can get rid of. I’ve just cancelled my contract and now pay £9.90 a month rather than £37, my phone is 2 years old but I’m not bothered.

Also we don’t pay for any tv or phone packages at home, we just have Internet and that saves us a fair bit.

Whenever an insurance is up for renewal we look around to make sure we have the best price.

I’m another who does the meal planning, I have coeliac so in a way that saves me a little bit of money because I can’t eat takeaways anyway! We don’t batch cook, just cook from just scratch for each meal.

I also transfer over so much money into my savings at the beginning of the month and that way it’s gone and I’m left with only a certain amount.
