Help solving a maths problem?
Can anyone help with the question below? It is from our DD aged 10 maths workbook and we are stumped and can't work out if we are doing it right. As written in the book, the question is:
It takes 2 hours 16 minutes to travel from A to B and then to C. Journey from A to B is 46 minutes more than B to C. How long does it take to travel from A to B? Hope there's someone smarter than us who can get this!

2hrs 16mins = 136mins
A-C = 136mins -46=90mins 90/2=45 mins Therefore B-C = 45 mins A-B= 45+46= 91 mins Am I close to what you have?

How I would work it out would be:
136 mins - 46= 90 90 divide by 2 = 45 Journey A to B would be 45+46= 91 mins long B to C would be 45 mins long Edited as others posted at the same time. Sorry! |

Thank you both so much, it was the 90 minutes divided by 2 we weren't getting and now makes perfect sense.

Thank you, we were overthinking and not doing the 9- divided by 2.

I find it helps if it is written in English not Maths... So you know the WHY of each step, not just the answers...
So journey from A to B to C takes 2hr 16min. That is 136minutes ((2x60) + 16). The journey from A to B is longer than the journey from B to C - it is longer by 46 minutes. Taking away the 46 from the total would make both legs equal - and so will point us to the journey length from B to C. 136-46=90 minutes That 90 minutes is the length of time from A to C if both legs are equal - so the journey time from B to C is half of that = 45 minutes. The journey time from A to B is 46 minutes longer = 45+46= 91 minutes or 1hr 31min. (Though 91 minutes is also correct, you would present the answer in the same format as was in the original question - hours and minutes) You can then check the answer because A to B and B to C = 2hr 16 min (136min) 91(A to B)+45(B to C)=136(A to C). So we know the answer is correct. Edited at 08:04 AM. |
