It isn’t very clear, is it? It doesn’t explain what constitutes ‘attempting to travel in violation of the proclamation.’

On the face of it, I would have thought that meant turning up to the airport and attempting to check in for your flight. But from people’s comments, it sounds like it means you’ve completed your API, even if that was done prior to the proclamation. I don’t suppose there’s any way to get it refunded, but it seems very wrong to say that someone filling in forms BEFORE the proclamation has attempted to violate the rules by travelling.

We filled in our APIs in October 2019 (for August 2020), so does this mean we have attempted to travel and violate the proclamation? Or am I misunderstanding the posts about API triggering the ESTA cancellations? I haven’t had any contact about our ESTAs being cancelled, but I daren’t go on the site to check, in case that somehow triggers a cancellation. I know it’s not a massive expense compared to the holiday, but $56 is still a significant amount of money, so I don’t want to risk having to pay it out twice if we don’t need to.

(Of course, I would double-check our ESTA status closer to our travel date, if our holiday goes ahead.)

It looks as if it's the time frame of the ban that triggers the expiry. So if travel is within the ban time, it also appears to be a month after the 30 days, then if API is completed this then triggers notice of expiry.

ESTAs are cancelled due to a 'change of circumstances', ie: no longer eligible for VWP travel.

For those with cancelled ESTA, hold off re-applying until the US reinstate VWP travel.

They are still approving ESTA's, you just can't travel on them. I think completing the API for travel during the ban triggers an expiry, having read other posts on this. The API appears to be notice of intent to travel. We are still showing on the VWP.
