Where to stay and what to see in San Diego area

Hi Dibbers,

We were (in theory still are!) booked for a 3 week trip at end of August, the first 2 weeks would be grand canyon and route 66, the last week was a cruise from LA which is cancelled. I realise that our trip is highly unlikely to happen, but if by some miracle we are able to fly, we need to put in place a replacement plan for the 7 days we would have been on a cruise. We have decided on San Diego (a place we just didnt have time to visit on our previous west coast holidays) so can anyone recommend areas to stay in, and whether 7 days is needed there or whether we should consider 4 days in San Diego and 3 days at a beach hotel?

I will be booking everything with free cancellation as I realise the chances are slim, however it would be foolish not to have a back up plan and no accommodation in place in the miraculous event that we do manage to go.If we dont get there, we plan to shift the holiday to next summer instead.

Thanks Dibbers!

For the past couple of years we have stayed at the Best Western Island Palms which is on Shelter Island. Lovely hotel with a very good restaurant. Sadly had to cancel our trip in June which included a stay there!

Nice promenade across the road which overlooks the Coronado Air Base which I found fascinating with all the aircraft taking off.

Good base for exploring a city that we absolutely love!

We also stayed at Shelter Island at Humphries Half Moon Resort. Had a lovely stay there. Loved San Diego. Think we did 5 days but could have stayed longer.

We also stayed here and recommend it.

I also recommend Aims' San Diego sticky thread at the top of this page. Loads of info.

Thanks for the suggestion of Best Western Island Palms, it looks great value at £117 a night for 4 people, and has free cancellation, so looks like a winner!😊

Definitely recommend this hotel and Aims is an amazing font of knowledge about San Diego. The sticky in this forum was a huge help in our planning. We loved San Diego and are looking forward to going back.

San Diego was one of my favorite places to visit on our 2019 road trip.

San Diego zoo is a good day out, set out like a tropical paradise and they have koala's that were very cute. They have bus tours on site which were informative and fun.

You should visit La Jolla in the late afternoon and watch the sun go down, lots of seals on the beautiful beaches and usually wedding photos being taken. Some people were swimming with the seals.

Old Town is good at night if you like a drink and good food.
