OK - so a "fast" lens lets more light in. This is measured by the f number.
If you have a zoom lens, it will be fxx to fyy where the first will be the speed at widest angle and the second will be the speed at max zoom. For a prime lens it will just be fzz

Zoom lenses are generally much slower (and therefore need more light) unless you spend a fortune. Some have the same speed through all zooms (or focal length range). Often f3.5 to f4.5.
Decent prime lenses might be say f1.8.
The lower the number the faster the lens and lets more light in.
