thanks so much everyone for the info. just got a query/advise. flying into dulles and just wondering what transport would you choose from the airport? staying near the pentagon (pentagon city).

We took a taxi flying in because the immigration took so long and we just wanted to get there. It was not overly cheap but it was door to door.

In the way home we took the metro and bus which was very easy and cheap.

After our flight though, I had planned to do the bus and metro but we just wanted to get there

There is some sort of minibus shared option that looked cheaper and may be worth investigating

We've booked SuperShuttle from Dulles. Paid an extra $10 to have our own van rather than a shared ride.
