Suffering with jet lag today after 23 hours travelling from Vietnam to our home yesterday and also feeling emotional about leaving our son again, but also sad to have left the beautiful sunshine, food and country. We really enjoyed ourselves and will definitely return, we didn’t go on the bigger trips this visit, such as Cu Chi, as we wanted to spend time with our son so a lot of our time was relaxing at the beach or some of the wonderful restaurants and bars. We did a lot of the usual tourist attractions though and are hoping to write a mini-trippy when we can (after we get over the jet lag and finished the huge pile of laundry 😂 ) with hints/tips to help others as we had so much help from others on here for our trip. Thanks again 😀

You were right when you said how friendly people were there, we were made to feel very welcome and valued as customers everywhere we went. Of course, in markets and the beach traders etc there was the usual calling out to get us to buy, but we never felt over pressured and when we said no, we were left alone. The restaurants we visited served fabulous tasting, well presented food even in the HCM street market where a meal cost £1-2, the meal was served with salad or sauces and presented beautifully by a smiling waiter. I could go on and on but you already know how good it is 😀

Looking forward to a trippie, even if it's just a highs and lows one.
You'll be planning your next visit soon |

Are the street markets Ok to eat at? Is there any food to avoid or is it all just common sense. I would have avoided salads so you have surprised me there

We ate at Ben Thanh Foodmarket which was right opposite our second hotel many times towards the second part of our trip. It was very clean and food was prepared fresh.
We also ate salad at many restaurants but these were ‘nicer’ restaurants. We tended to avoid ice in drinks and found bottled beer to taste better than draught beer. We didn’t eat food from street stalls or side street restaurants (the small plastic chair ones) but we did eat at local owned places. I guess we had the advantage of our son’s knowledge of where to eat safely but we virtually had no problems with dodgy stomachs. I did have one afternoon when I felt unwell but that was in Hoi An and I feel that was because of the heat, not anything I ate. We also took probiotics for a week before we travelled and while we were there which may have helped too. One speciality to try is morning glory, which is a garlicky cooked water spinach dish and it’s delicious and available everywhere. Our daughter barely eats any vegetables but loved this and ordered it with nearly every meal |
