Camera for a Safari
I'm going on safari in May/June to Kenya, and I really want a camera to allow me to take good pictures. I want to buy now so I can learn how to use it properly. I have read stuff online and narrowed things down but not made a decision.
I don't want an SLR and I don't think I want a mirrorless, as I don't want to be swapping lenses, especially in a potentially dusty environment although I have been tempted by Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 and Sony A6000. I figure I need a bridge or superzoom camera. I've been looking at:- Canon Powershot SX70 - but is the sensor too small for low light? Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 Canon Powershot - SX740 - but, again, is the sensor too small? Any thoughts on these? Is there something else I should look at? Looking at maximum budget of £500. Thanks in advance for any help! Edited to add - I am quite happy to consider an older model or a second hand camera to get the right one

I used a Panasonic Lumix (DMC-FZ200) for many years before buying my first DSLR a couple years ago.
If for any reason I had to give up my Canon, I would go back to that same camera in a heart beat. All of my trip-reports pre 2016 are with the Lumix.

While all these cameras are great, I dont think any would be the choice for a safari. To me, while I know you say you dont want an SLR, I think that with some decent lenses for long shots would be ideal.
Bur from the ones you mention, I am a big Lumix fas so that would be the one for me for normal use - but as I say, I would want my SLR for a safari. |

I worry about the weight of an SLR, as we borrowed a Canon for Florida and even with one modest lens and no extra lenses the weight crippled me (I have a problem with my neck so get quite sore around the neck and shoulders). I also worry about getting dust in the working whilst changing, and missing a good shot whilst faffing with lenses.
I looked at mirrorless - A6000 and Lumix DMC-G7 - might something like that be a compromise? If so, what kind of lenses would you recommend for a safari?

I can understand your point about the weight of a dSLR.
I am assuming that you will want to take mainly long range shots, so a fairly long lens might be what you need. Maybe up to 300 focal length. But if you want it to be your day to day camera you will want a wide angle lens. I just think that a safari type holiday has quite specific requirements in that quite often you will be some distance away from your subject. Again, given the two cameras mentioned - I would be on the Lumix. I get your point about changing lenses and dust will be a risk. |
