In this day and age any airline could go bust without warning... but that doesn't stop people booking with Virgin, BA etc.
The airline hasn't gone bust and is unlikely to go bust IMO, especially if Lufthansa buy it. I agree that it can't guarantee the same price with another airline, but flight prices are always going up and down regardless if another airline has gone bust or not. I always say if the price is right.. book it, but ensure you have the correct insurance/cover if all fails.

I read that webpage as well, just after I posted my question.
The bit I was unsure about is where it says, "the cover will also usually allow you to claim back the cost of alternative flights". I notice it doesn't say "claim back the cost of the original flights" but instead says I can claim for the new flights. So, does that mean I can claim back the total cost of those alternative flights even if they are higher than the original flights? Flights with someone like Virgin tend to be significantly more. That's what I'm wondering. TBH, if I pay with a CC then I'll be able to get my money back anyway. I think some insurance companies will try to get you to claim with your CC company first anyway? So, unless it allows me to claim for the total cost of the alternative flights, I don't really see the point of end supplier failure in this case. I guess at the end of the day if I don't book with TC now then I'd have to book with someone else (eg. Virgin) later anyway and at a higher price. So, worse case, I book with TC, the flights get cancelled, I claim my money back, and book with someone else and have to pay more. And I would've had to pay more anyway if I didn't book with TC in the first place.

The insurance should cover you for any costs, so they will pay for any new flights you have to book and even overnight hotels if you become stranded!
Thomas Cook airlines is the one side that isn't in trouble its profitable and currently have lufthansa, Virgin and a Netherland airline all making offers! They have slots in local airports that the bigger companies are desperate to get hold of!

I would not book.
Every day I would dread the headline ‘xxx’ and the potential that my plans would be thrown into disarray, protection, insurance or not. I agree any airlines could go bust, but there are few with the known financial problems that are a fact with TC. Each to their own though, Disney332

Correct, I feel that whoever buys TC Airlines will run it in the same model that VA run their LGW-MCO route by code sharing.
TC Airlines are still extremely profitable and have major bids for a takeover. Please remember that ultimately the 'financial problems' sit with their tour operating side of the business.

I think that's my concern - not the financial protection side of things but the dread and hassle of having to rebook flights. Or, if the airlines merges with another and the new company decides to change the flights by a few days, the hassle of hoping we can rejig annual leave, alter hotel bookings, etc.
(BTW, I am leaning towards booking them and thinking positive thoughts. )

Booked for this October and next September and looking to book in June 2020 as well, sadly Thomas cook is making headlines and the press really like to stick that knife in and squish it about a bit which then makes everyone panic. Other airlines have issues, other airlines have equal debt to Thomas Cook but manage to keep it quiet instead of trying to manage what they have. I firmly believe that Thomas Cook will resolve their issues and I will continue to book with them until some one says they no longer fly.

Word of warning to anyone thinking of booking flights only...
I was researching insurance the other day as I'm booked with Thomas Cook next year.. I was looking at end supplier failure and airline failure and found in the small print 'we will not cover you if a company has been known in the media to be suffering financial difficulties'. Saw this on the only 2 insurance companies I looked at.. so I'm betting a lot, if not all have it in their small print. |
