Family of 5, 2 cases, 2 hand luggage cases and we each had a small backpack for the plane, the Quechua ones. It was important for us to take as little as possible as we travelled by train to Gatwick.
The kids had a sticker book and their tablets and snacks, the Lego and little toys weren’t played with, they watched movies on the IFE.

We're a family of 4 and take 4 cases. We pack as light as we can going out and do washing whilst out there. We all like to do a bit of shopping and all 4 cases were pretty much at the weight limit coming back.
My kids are older than yours now but we each take a cabin bag and the kids have to carry their own. This does help them focus a bit on what they actually need on board, which in reality is not a lot, just electronics, books and snacks. (and I make them pack practical stuff like jumpers etc.)

We have 3 cases and one hand luggage.

Inside those cases we have 2 spare cases and a spare hand luggage.

Thanks everybody getting back to me. I think what I will do is put one small case in a large one for coming back and invest in luggage straps.
