We found in early Nov they were not strictly necessary, but it was such a joy to stay at the hotel, it was a nice perk to have.

Thanks everyone for your replies - lot's of food for thought!
It's just 2 adults (myself included) who are going - we will be in Orlando from 5 November 2018 for 14 nights so judging from what everyone say's it might just be an idea to just buy the 3 park 2 day tickets and not bother with a hotel since we probably won't need the Express passes!

We are going in August and there are 8 of us so think the passes will be very much needed and getting two rooms works out a lot cheaper for us.
