Key West... Getting around, eating, sights?
Evening folks
For our August '20 trip, we have a couple of nights in Key West as part of a road trip. We're splitting the drive down with a night in Miami, so can get a relatively early start from there, break in Key Largo maybe for a bite, then on to Key West hopefully by early afternoon. Staying at Pier House Resort (no, not the Presidental Suite! Not until the Euromillions comes up), so we're right on Mallory Square for the sunset. We'll have check in day, one full day, and a relatively early start back on check out day, so two evenings and a full day to explore. Once we check in, I'm kinda hoping to just forget the car until the drive back, so any thoughts, comments and experiences please on the two ticketed HO-HO trolleys, or the free Duval Loop Bus? Did the HO-HO in St Augustine last year, felt it was a bit expensive for what it was, so I'm leaning toward the Duval Bus. Really want to get to the Southern Most point of the US and Mike Marker 0 of US Hwy 1, for cheesy family selfies, but both are in the bus route. Any thoughts on eats (13y/o daughter friendly, we're not on a party weekend!), things to do, sights too see? Experience of fellow Dibbers most appreciated, tia Edited at 07:59 PM. |

We stayed in Key West last year for a couple of nights and we loved it that much that we head there again next summer for 4 nights this time. In Key West, we went kayaking and hired a three wheeled scooter kart thing - both great fun! Food wise, one night we ate at a mexican place just off Duval Street (can't remember the name!) which was great and reasonably priced. The second night we ate a big Cuban restaurant on Mallory Square - we waited 45 minutes for a table so we thought it must be good. Oh my goodness, it was absolutely terrible. Seriously it was like cold baby food! Avoid!
On the way down, stop at Hobo's Cafe in Key Largo - no view but the food is to die for - all home cooked! Don't miss it! There's also a Key Lime Pie shop just a bot further down on the opposite side, stock up there; delicious!

The Duval bus really is just a means of servicing the hotels on the island. The Trolley tours really are worth it, give you a sense of direction if you want to wander round by yourself later. They run frequently so you don't have to wait long in-between hop offs.
Our favourite eatery was Bahama Mamas in Key West ETA It appears Bahama Mamas has closed

We stayed in Key West for 3 nights a few years back, we did the HoHo bus, added the aquarium and smugglers museum to it and thought it was good, but to be honest you can walk to everything as its not that big. My high lights was a boat trip to snorkel on the barrier reef (saw a shark) amazing. And a visit to the Discovery Center, which is free, very cool (lovely aircon) and quite informative. An evening bar crawl is a must (we left before midnight and honestly did not even see a drunk person let alone any sights I wouldnt let my 10 year old see), the Kyote Ugly bar was great fun

You can walk the length of Duvall from your hotel to southernmost point (it's about a mile) - if you want a photo at the buoy then I would go early as queues build up. You could divert onto Whitehead (runs parallel to Duvall) about 1/2 way down for a photo at mile market 0 (and call into the green parrot?)
Don't miss the butterflies at the bottom end of Duvall too - a must for us now. Can recommend fisherman's cafe in the marina area - cheap but very good food, delicious coffee, then sit people watching! Must get my hotel for May booked!

If you want a treat, but not outrageous, have a meal upstairs at A&B's Lobster House - stunning seafood dishes.
Try Schooner Wharf during the day for a sit down and live music Blue Heaven for breakfast is amazing - their lobster eggs benedict is legendary. |

Don't bother with the bus and definitely don't do the haunted tour, instead hire bikes and grab a tour book. Just remember don't peddle backwards, that's how you brake! Fantastic fun though
