Should I be worried?

We have the back door open and my dog has just come inside with something that looked suspiciously like a mouse in his mouth. I couldn't get him to drop it, being a pug he is very possessive about "food" and so when we tried to get it, he swallowed it more or less whole.

And sorry to be horrid but where he temporarily dropped it there was a mark on the floor which when we went to clean it there were maggots. So I think he has eaten a maggot infested mouse.

We have a cat and DH says he hunts although cat doesn't bring things inside but DH says he leaves them outside (I have not seen this so maybe DH is removing things before I can).

I am expecting the dog to be sick shortly but still worried, should I be doing something?

The maggots wouldn't worry me( a little extra protein) I would be concerned about the cause of death though. If it has been killed by the cat - fine. If it's been poisoned then I'd worry.

As a side note my German Shepherd swallowed a chicken satay on a skewer whole last week. Nothing we could do as causing her to be sick could actually cause more damage. We just had to keep an eye on her for signs of internal bleeding. I bet I looked great inspecting her poo! The stick did eventually emerge - still whole!

Hopefully he will just sick it up!
My dog did this once, he was sick in the bedroom one night and brought up a whole mouse!

My dog ate a dead rabbit (it had been dead a while, maggots and all), and he was absolutely fine! I did keep expecting him to have the runs or be sick, but nothing! I called the vet who told me to keep an eye on him just incase, but that it happens all the time, so not to worry too much!

Has your pug been sick yet , does he/she seem ok ?
My brother has a black pug and she will eat absolutely anything, even her poop if she gets to it first 😱

I would watch the dog carefully and any sign of illness phone vet. You could always give your vet a call tomorrow morning once they are open and at our vet practise a vet nurse will give advise over the phone.

Well it’s been a while, currently can’t get to sleep and puggy is beside me snoring away happily. He has been fine so far, which surprised me.

I don’t think the mouse was a poisoned one, I am sure it was a present from the cat that DH didn’t manage to remove in time. There are only five houses in the area as we are rural and I don’t think any of us would put poison out.

Fingers crossed he is ok tomorrow, not sure I like sharing the bed with him tonight.

I’m sure he would be showing signs of poisoning pretty quickly! Dogs guts are designed to eat all sorts of rotting meat, so a little mouse with extra meat should be fine! Although I would avoid doggy kisses for a while! 😣

Dogs stomach acid is far stronger than humans so they can eat meat that would make us ill. He should be ok.

Even if it is poisoned, your dog would have to eat a lot of poisoned mice to get a dose big enough to cause problems. The poison works on a mg/kg liveweight rate so an odd mouse or two is absolutely fine (it's actually loads more than two before any observable effects).
