duty free allowance for 18 yo?
Hi - my youngest son will be 18 when we fly this year and I was wondering whether he will have the full duty free allowance? I know he can't purchase or consume alcohol in the USA but does this also apply to the duty free shop given that you can't open the bottles until you're back in the UK?
Thanks for any advice |

He wont be able to have any in his possession in the usa at all. They wouldn't even let my son aged 20 carry a bag from wallgreens as it had beer in.

As far as I am aware he can purchase duty free as he is leaving the USA as it is the law of the country the plane is flying to that applies in that situation and any purchases are sealed and taken to the lane for collection. He will not, of course, be able to drink or purchase alcohol whilst on his holiday. As he is a UK adult he is entitled to the full UK duty free allowance when he arrives back.

Oh, right. Thanks. It gets a bit confusing when different age limits apply, but as I say it's not a problem either way. I think he's the only 18 y.o who drank Dr Pepper on his 18th birthday whilst his mates hit the jagerbombs he has very little interest in alcohol himself at the moment but I guess that might change once he gets to uni. If he does get the full allowance it'll be me that benefits!
Thanks! |

You can buy alcohol in the States and put it in your case as his duty free allowance. Alternatively I think you can buy what you want from Duty Free ( so you can buy his allowance) using your ticket
