We tend to book connecting rooms as it just gives us more space and with 2 older teens it does make a difference. We've booked cat 11's before and if you have a look here you'll see what our stateroom looked like. It can often be cheaper to book two connecting lower category cabins than one higher one with a varandah, just depends on the cruise.

We're on the Fantasy next summer and have booked connecting 8a's there are some that only sleep 3 (which are the one's we booked) and for our Christmas 2014 we've gone back to one of the 8a's that sleep 4 here's a picture. This cabin is really spacious but the downside is that there's no privacy curtain or split bathroom but we're only in it for 4 nights so it's no big deal for us.

There's loads of options you could consider and you'll probably get a better idea of what you'd like once you've done this cruise.

Have you thought about booking now to secure your price, then re-shopping it onboard to see if there is a difference?

With the southern Caribbean cruises, I believe they will be very popular and, as such, the price will only go up and not down. Even taking into account the 10% on board booking discount, you could find it more expensive than booking it now.

If it is lower when you're onboard, ask DCL or your TA if you use one to apply the new price. Simples
Win win.

That's what we've done for our Alaska cruise but my two will be 15 & 16, I think Ruth's kids are a bit younger so probably wouldn't be up for a cabin on their own just yet

If you use a site like Kayak it will give you all the options. Or you could book a flight to and from the US if you want to spend some time there then book internal flights with Southwest, JetBlue, AA

Thanks so much for all the info, we now have quote from Tracy for a family verrandah on deck 8, it's about $500 more than 2 inside rooms. Even though girls will be 14 and 13 by then still not sure about separate cabins, and I suffer from claustrophobia/panic attacks so need at least one verrandah...we're still dithering, what with falling dollar rate too..

As to getting to/from San Juan, I think Jet Blue fly from/to New York and there's no baggage fees with them, or lots of flights out of Florida airports too, probably dirt cheap...we need to ask the Trannys on the other thread how they're getting home!
