They would reissue revised paperwork for the upgraded car at the exit gate check. You need to have a printed copy of your agreement with the correct details both for legal reasons (it has to carried in the glove box all the time) and for your own assurance that everything is correct.

This would be where the guy in the other thread who wondered if you could just help yourself to a higher spec car from a different row and drive it away would come a cropper.

Thank you God could you imagine if you had a prang out there and not insured! No thank you!

I don't think there would be an issue re: insurance. There would be an issue that:
- you have taken a car in a higher class than your paperwork stated
- you were allowed to take it out of the garage, and
- you bribed a company official (possibly fraud or conspiracy to commit fraud) in doing so

Whilst insurance companies don't "try and wriggle out of paying legitimate claims" like many people think, it's usually wise not to give them lots of reasons to do so

I realised at the weekend that the compact I booked would likely not be big enough as the fleet cars look smaller than what I had last time. I cancelled yesterday very easily and am shopping around for a standard instead - 2 classes up and looks like only £50 more than I paid which is nothing really for peace of mind. Far better than worrying about what I will get when I get there tired after a long flight.

Personally I would book the correct size car with the correct insurance. As others have said, by all means tip a helpful member of staff on the hopes of getting the best car within the class you book but don't rely on it.

Thomas cook said the 'free car' they will provide me with is a suitable size for my party.
My argument with them was that their mid-sized car would not be big enough for 2 adults, 3 kids, 5 cases, 5 handluggage and a buggy. they said the car will provide will be suitable.
1) so do i take their word for it ? and if so i would upgrade my insurance to fully comp using Thomas Cook (£336).
2) Do i take their word for it and upgrade my insurance to fully comp from external source ?
3) What if the car isnt big enough and i end up having to take an upgrade to a bigger car, would TC insurance cover the bigger car? Would external insurance cover the bigger car ?

We are a family of 4, on our first trip we hired an intermediate SUV, that only just fit in 3 suitcases & a pushchair. We now have no need for the pushchair but still hire a full size SUV (just our preference). As someone else has said, I would look at Alamo Brits, hire a car big enough for you needs including the correct insurance. This year we paid just over £500 with Brits for 15 days hire. I'd rather have piece of mind rather than trusting Thomas Cook with their version of a suitable car !

The "tipping" at Sanford isn't really tipping and staff have been sacked for taking money. What they were doing for seen as defrauding the company they worked for.

The Thomas cook "free" car is anything but free. Their insurance is at very much the higher end of the market and designed to make the car the same price as a non-free car for most. You would be better searching for your own car hire and get the size you need. Alamo Brits is cheap for many. My cheapest deal this time was with auto Europe at £297 for a mid-size Suv for two weeks.
