Hi guys, just checking with the AA - and they say this:

USA (Florida) compulsory IDP – 1 January 2013
A law was introduced in Florida, USA, on 1 January 2013 requiring all persons who hold a licence issued outside of the US to carry an International Driving Permit along with their national driving licence.

The Governor of Florida repealed this law on 2 April 2013, however, car hire companies and insurance companies can impose their own terms and conditions so you should check with your intended hire/insurance company prior to travel or obtain an IDP as a precautionary measure.

Just as it says the legislation was illegal and removed immediately.

I would go as far as saying that not one single Dibber has been asked for an IDP if their D/L is in English.

I'd be interested to see which car hire company has it in their Ts & Cs.

Mick

It may be my memory but I think we had to have one way back in the 1970's.
My mind could be playing tricks though!

People moan about car hire cost now! Should have paid what we had to with Avis who were the main players back then. A 4+ week car hire was horrendous

Interesting. If you follow the UK gov official links on IDP you are directed to the AA page you reference, listing IDP as required or recommended for the USA.

In addition to the note you quoted is a recommendation:
J – IDP recommended as, in the event of an accident, some insurance companies will insist on seeing one. Additionally those licences which do not incorporate a photograph need to be accompanied by photographic proof of identity.
Hence the point about rental companies being consulted concerning IDP requirements.

Tom, I couldn't find anything generic to suggest an IDP for USA for the 70's, but perhaps this insurance point might have been the issue back then?!?

EDIT: I should have added I got one once, many moons ago, but I cannot recall why I felt I needed one?!? Wouldn't have been the 70's though.

Edited at 07:22 PM.

Hi all, another Driving Licence question question, I'm based in N Ireland and my Licence expired in April, I sent off for renewal then and wait times were supposed to be 16 days, phoned today to see if any progress and they said it still hasn't been even looked at, big delays, my renewal isn't scheduled to be looked at for another 7-10 days and from this point it's still 4-6 weeks!
I'm off to Florida in late June, would anyone know what my options are for the car hire, I'm also due to hire a car in Liverpool in early June

Do you have the old paper license? That and your passport will work in Florida.

Yes, in NI both parts of licence are still valid, I'm just worried that they both have an an Validity date that has expired

If it's expired then you won't be able to use it.
