sat nav

Has anyone hired a sat nav with their hire car... I was thinking of buying the USA/Canada maps to go on my tom tom and take it with me or is it just better hiring one with the car... I don't know what kind of sat nav the hire company use, I will be with Alamo.

just use Google maps and download the area you will be using to your phone so it works offline without data

Either use a phone as suggested above or load your sat nav preloaded. The hire car one will be expensive as it's a per day charge.

Mobile

The ones with the hire car are really expensive. A couple of years ago I hired one from eBay. It only cost me £15 for two weeks & the return postage was free.
Just make sure the eBay hirer has good feedback.

Buying a cheapish android phone might be cheaper than buying maps tbh, buy a small holder as well and you will be away.

I don't think tom tom do this but I rented my maps last time for my Mio sat nav and it was quite cheap for 30 days or so.

We had a free satnav from Andy at Discount Florida Car Hire, all it cost was the £15 postage and the car hire was the cheapest we could find too.

I take my TomTom as I'm familiar with it's operation and know it's reliable, which cannot be said for in car systems such as Hertz 'Never Lost'!

When leaving parks at night in pouring rain, a trusted satnav is invaluable.
