Road Trip Tolls! Where do we start

Hi all.

Can anyone give us some advice please in relation to toll roads.

We collect our car from Disney car care centre and will be driving the following route.

Disney to Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island to Fort Myers
Fort Myers to Miami.

The above locations will be our hotel locations, however, we will be venturing off to visit surrounding areas such as Naples, Marco Island, Everglades City etc.

My question is do we need to purchase a Sunpass or can we get away with having plenty of change in the car?

Will the Sunpass be value for money? Where do we buy one? Are they easy to set up?

Suppose I am worried we will pull up to an 'unmanned' booth, panic, drive though and get hit with a whooping fine!

Apologies for all the questions and many thanks for any help in advance.

Some road signs will have only unmanned tolls some will be sun pass only
Sunpass pick up from Publix set it up on line pre pay around $20
Register the car on the account and if concerned about the balance check on line and top up as needed
I sometimes if I can get a WiFi connection in the hire garage link the car there if not I do it when I get to the villa it automatically takes the 3 tolls off just don’t forget to take it off the car and. De register the car when you hand it back it’s simple honest

OP. Good response by Gryff above.

However if you aren't going back for a while I wouldn't bother buying the Sunpass for the car.

As you are with Alamo and if you don't stop to pay physical cash and just sail through the lanes you will only be charged a one off $19.75 admin fee for the duration of the holiday plus the tolls incurred.
Alamo is an absolute bargain compared to some companies.

As Helen says you can buy your own toll pass and register it to the hire car.

We've never done that though because all tolls in Florida work on the "toll by plate" system. You don't have to buy anything, sign up to anything or register anything when you collect the car. Driving through any Sunpass lane without stopping to pay will automatically enable Sunpass by taking a photo of your plate. Some schemes (such as Alamo) are far better than others.

This web site tells you all you need to know about Sunpass and any cashless tolls. Click on "traveller information" then "rental vehicles" will show how they all charge.

Just for clarity you will not be fined by anyone - you'll just pay the appropriate admin fee.

Thanks everyone. Nice to know there are options and no great need to panic after all :-)
