4 go La La in La La Land - Day 16: When can we do this again, I never want this to end

Thursday 16th August 2018

We woke up feeling a little flat today, as this was the day we hadn’t wanted to arrive - last full day of the holiday, and last park day of the holiday. However, we were determined to make the most of it, so we got up, got showered and got into Disneyland park for around 9am.

Before we even thought about rides, it was time for breakfast, and we had a reservation at Carnation Cafe on Main Street. We were here (well, Melissa was) for one reason and one reason only - Mickey Waffles! This is the only place on property that serves them. We were soon seated and making our orders:

Melissa - Mickey Waffles served with syrup, cream, whipped butter and strawberry compote

Me - Eggs Benedict

E&M - All American Breakfast, one with Bacon and one with Sausage

There was a little mix up with the orange juice, as one of them was really watery - we couldn’t see our waitress, so we mentioned it to another that was passing and she said she would sort it out. However, appears our waitress was already aware as she then came back with a fresh one, shortly followed by the other waitress, also with a fresh one - now we had too many OJ’s, but they said just to keep the extra!

Food soon arrived and it was all delicious - particularly the waffles! It was a great way to start our last day in the park.

Breakfast eaten, Melissa and the girls went off to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which was only showing a 15 minute wait. Whilst they were doing this, I went and grabbed them some fast passes for Indiana Jones for a bit later. I also wanted to grab tickets for Fantasmic that night. We’d wanted the 9pm showing, but these had already all gone, so 10.30pm showing it was - oh well, just means we would have to make use of more time in the park!

By the time I’d done this, the others had finished on BTMR - Splash Mountain was showing only a 5 minute wait so me and the girls went to ride that but, by the time we got there, the wait showed as 50 minutes, so we opted for single rider.

It was another hot day and Pooh had the right idea nearby being in the shade!

Whilst we did this, the plan was for Melissa to go and take some photos of the castle and also ride "It's a Small World" - she likes to ride this for sentimental family reasons, whereas the rest of us aren’t that fussed! As it turned out, she didn’t make it as far as she bought one of the "Up" donuts that had been sold out on Sunday. She was very very happy and stated it was the best $6 she had spent! Light and fluffy and not sickly sweet at all. Looked too good to eat!

However, we didn’t discover this initially, as we actually had to find her! Prior to going on to Splash, we’d given her everything to look after, including all our phones, so we had no way of making contact. However, we soon spotted her - as we were walking through Fantasyland, we spotted Beauty and the Beast walking along and there she was, a few steps ahead, walking backwards, trying to get a photo - she didn’t spot us though, so we managed to photobomb some of the pictures she was taking!

Photos taken before we came along!

From here, the girls decided to go and check out some of the rides in Toon Town, as we had not yet explored this area.

Queue times were still quite low here, so they managed a go on Roger Rabbit Toon Town Spin (their verdict - bad!), and Go Go Gadget Coaster (this was marginally better at “ok”!). We left Toon Town and Melissa and girls rode their Indy Fastpass, which they loved again.

It had now gone Midday and was really hot. We listened to the band, took a quick glance at the tiny castle, and headed out for our afternoon siesta!

Although, to be fair, this afternoon it also included packing for home

Around 4.30pm, we headed off to Cheesecake Factory, where it was happy hour. Again, we just ordered some appetisers to share - one day we might order mains! Roadside Sliders, Crispy Crab Bites, Pork Belly & Fries.

Of course, it would have been rude not to also have cheesecake!

Me - Cherry Cheesecake
E - Reese’s Peanut Butter Cake
M - Godiva Cheesecake

Melissa decided against having anything as she had her eye on a snack back in the park later - although she did manage to have at least one mouthful of each of ours!

After tea it was time to head back to the park for one final time.

We arrived whilst the Pixar Play parade was taking place, so we watched a bit of this as we headed up Main Street - our destination was Haunted Mansion, which was showing a 13 minute wait!

After this, we had some photopass photos taken in front of the castle, and then the girls and I endured It’s A Small World, for Melissa’s sake! To be fair, we actually all quite enjoyed it - we thought it was better than the Florida version, and enjoyed spotting the various characters that had been placed in the different tableaux.

We wanted to try and get a few rides done this evening, so the girls went off to ride Space Mountain, but it was down, we then decided to try Autopia, but that was showing a 40 minute wait, so we opted against that and headed to the monorail, which was only running one train - we weren’t having much luck in Tomorrowland! We decided to wait it out in the monorail queue though, and entertained ourselves by watching the CM’s who were trying to clear the streetlights in the queuing area of spiders, using brooms! We rode the whole loop through Downtown Disney and back to Tomorrowland. When we got off, we headed to Pizza Planet. M had seen some strange slushie concoction on the Disney Food Blog and was keen to try it. After a couple of sips, she was less keen!

Melissa said as it was getting cooler, she would get a hot chocolate.

Space Mountain was now back up so the girls went to ride this via the single rider queue, whilst Melissa and I went and sorted and purchased the photopass pictures we had had taken earlier (which are now up on our kitchen wall!). We went back and met the girls - the fireworks had just finished and the crowds as we tried to head back across the hub were crazy!

Melissa was now ready for her dessert that she had deferred earlier and got a macaron from Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe - it was, apparently, very very good and even worthy of 2 photos!

We were all now beginning to flag a bit, so headed over to the Rivers of America area, which is where Fantasmic takes place. The reserved area (which we could use with the tickets we’d picked up this morning) was really well policed right up until the show started, and then the CM’s just seemed to let anyone in, which seemed a bit pointless!

The show itself was good - it’s quite different to the Florida version as they are obviously constrained by the area not being purpose built for the show. A lot of it was projected on to the water, and there was less live action elements than the Hollywood Studios version.

The boat scene towards the end, where the characters sail round on the boat, uses the Mark Twain riverboat, which is quite big and, consequently, looked a bit empty. We were really glad we saw it and enjoyed it, but the Florida Fantasmic is still the best for us.

We joined the crowds leaving, and took a last walk down Main Street.

This was the moment that seemed to bring the holiday to a close, and we left as the park closed and headed back to the hotel for the final time.

We had made the most of our 4 days in the parks, ticked everything off the list that we wanted to do, and had LOVED every moment. We’d ridden all the rides we wanted, seen all the shows and parades we’d wanted, and eaten and drunk all the food, drinks and snacks we’d wanted.

It had been great to experience Walt’s original park.

Thanks for reading.

Tomorrow: Santa Monica and heading home.

The breakfast looked yummy. I appreciated the hidden Mickey made from the pots of cream, butter and jam. It seemed like you had a lovely last day in the park.

What a brilliant last day! So glad that you managed to do everything you wanted. Can't believe that they were only appetisers at the Cheesecake Factory, we might have to do the same if we visit here x
