We prefer to buy dollars in advance rather than use a credit / debit card as we like to change some each payday in the months before we travel.
You can do this via a card like Monzo. Just in load it with USD rather than GBP. I know you say you aren’t keen on a card, but if you have it loaded in USD before you go what is there not to like? You can track purchases in an app, take out money from a cash machine free of charge and have multiple cards per account. You can load extra money if you really need it whilst you are out there and put a card on freeze if you lose it whilst continuing to use the others.

Interested to understand why the resistance to use a card as I can’t help but think they feel so flexible.

Too many people reporting issues with hold charges and problems accessing their cash. There was a post just last week about FairFx.

The biggest reason though is that we are always on a budget and being able to physically take today’s money out of the safe has always worked well for us.

Did you ask at the service desk or a cashier (who often don't know the rules). Often over the service desk they have big signs saying you can cash checks here and they specifically mention TC and no charge. It's a service publix offer and if you google it you will even see some banks mention it for out of hours cheque cashing! Obviously publix are hoping you will spend some with them, but it is not a requirement.

It's possible its changed in the last few months, but I'd be surprised. I'll check next time I'm there. I found it great at getting rid of those $500 TC you sometimes get.

We did ask at customer services and they said we needed to buy something and they’d give us the change in cash. Might have just been the individual we spoke with or it could be that Publix has changed its policy. We have since successfully used as currency at Disney to buy a gift but it is funny the reactions we get from staff, you’d think we’d handed over something from the Ark!
