How much do Disney consider a 14 or 21 day ultimate ticket to be worth? I know their 10 day pass with water parks and hopping costs $593. A Gold annual pass inc tax is $648. So the difference equates to $55 which is what it should cost if they're basing the upgrade on a 10 day ticket.

I don't know how much Disney would value a 14 or 21 day ultimate ticket though, surely it would be more valuable than a 10 day ticket? And surely the upgrade would be cheaper fro a 21 day pass compared to a 14 day?

It doesn't seem to be standard anyway - we asked on 2 different occasions in Oct and were quoted $177 at AK and $63.90 at Disney Springs...

Platinum Plus AP is $1058.61 inc tax and a Platinum AP is $952.11 inc tax so minus whatever they consider a 14 day ultimate to be worth. At a guess I'd say about $495.

Does it matter where you buy the tickets from? ATD have a good deal and I wonder if they would still do it if they're bought from a third party?

Not sure - ours were part of a package from Disney so I don't know if it makes a difference.

I see some people book and pay for tickets, then decide to re-visit within the year - those upgrading make sense to me.
But if you've already scheduled 2 visits within a year, why not just buy the AP from the start and save the messing about?

My thoughts exactly. Just go on the WDW web site and buy them. Surely this would save the hassle of upgrading.

The cost to upgrade from an ultimate ticket works out cheaper than buying the annual pass direct. That’s the reason.

We had a package as part of a family trip and then decided we would upgrade just in case.
