Tips on air sickness on the overnight flights

We’ve just booked our third holiday for 2020 and my 9 year old (he’ll be 11 when we go) is always horribly sick on the overnight flight back from Orlando. He’s absolutely fine on the way out (and is always awake for the whole flight) but tends to fall asleep on the return and is then sick for the last 2-3 hours (and through the airport, through the car park, on the car journey home... it’s never ending). Apart from keeping him awake, any tips on managing this weird one-way sickness? He’s absolutely fine in cars, boats etc so it’s something about this overnight return that sets him off. Once he starts he just can’t stop Thanks!

Our youngest used to do that on the overnight on the way back
Found taking things like crackers cheese fruit plenty of water and some sort of travel sickness medication after the meal cured it
It’s awful as you are tired invariably they manage to hit you you are raking in cases for yet more clean clothes for you both and the trash bags and wipes you thought you had enough of you don’t
Thankfully he’s fine now but was 15/16 before it stopped

Oh no I was sort of hoping that by 11 he might have outgrown it! Yes it's just horrible I'm going to order him a fruit platter rather than the meal as I don't think that awful food helps. Crackers is a good idea thanks

My daughter was exactly the same. Awful sickness on the last bit of the plane journey. In the end she never ate anything on the plane but every half an hour had a couple of sips of water. Any thing she ate was only going to come back up so it wasn't worth it. Making sure she wasn't over tired seemed to help as well. But being prepared with a plastic bag, and wipes just in case. It was better for her to starve on the plane than have the trauma of being sick thats for sure.

We have exactly the same problem with our 11 year old daughter. She’s fine with n the day flight over there but every transatlantic night flight she’s got her head in a sick bag for the last few hours of the journey & even in the car home. We’ve tried various medications & bands, nothing seems to help. I think it’s the exhaustion.
I’d love to know if anyone has found a top tip for overcoming this

Looks like it's not just us then! Hopefully someone has a miracle cure for all our poor children!

I am now 52 and it always happens on the return night flight but find being tried makes it worst, if I fall to sleep on the flight when I wake up this is then I am sick and it last few hours on the flight, the journey home and even about 1 hour after we get back before it stops. I use ginger biscuits but i place a small piece and let it melt in my mouth it does help, drink lots of water before the flight as once in the air I can feel my stomach going so have to use a distract usually headphones and gentle music, as not able to watch seat screen makes me worst so does reading so I avoid both on any journey. I now buy travel sickness pill in Florida now which have worked really well the last 6 trips but think they are adult only but are non-drowsy one pill every 24 hours as I can not do a number of rides without it. It took me 20 years to find out what works for me. I know how your son feels he is young poor thing. I would try your GP to see if there is anything he could use which is age appropriate good luck.
