In my experience, Apple Pay aside, the US is lagging the UK in adoption of contactless payments. Could of course just be the areas I have visited but I’ve been met with surprise on occasion when I’ve used it as staff had not seen it before, despite is being enabled on their tills.

Yes both our cards are registered and used home here all the time, but neither would work over there which was frustrating as I wanted to go out without bag purse etc and just my phone

Well that's annoying - did you query it with the providers? Just wonder if it was the card restriction as I use apple pay with my Monzo card.

In the USA they seem to hardly even have contactless so maybe some places but not widespread. Last time I used a card at Disney for over $50 in 2015 they wanted to swipe, signature and a form of ID, was madness. I really hope it’s changed.

You have to remember that credit card fraud used to be quite high in the USA compared to other countries. They bought it all upon themselves as in most cases when it was a "swipe and sign" card sale, they would swipe your card and give it straight back to you. Your card could be back in your wallet / purse before you signed, so no signature check was ever made. As long as the transaction came back as authorised they did not care.
Chip+PIN seems pretty prevalent over there now, which is a lot more secure. Apple (or Android) pay is even more secure as a fingerprint or facial-scan cannot be written down for someone else / a fraudster to use. The hit & miss take-up / acceptance of Apple pay is odd, given that Apple is American & the largest company in the world by market value. |
