After promotion to Premier League….
What do Burnley and Leeds need to do to avoid going straight back down again.
I don’t watch enough Championship games to know how good these teams are so just curious on what those who do watch them think. Burnley were hailed as a fantastic footballing side last time the got promoted, but they were awful in PL. Just interested in people’s thoughts as it can’t be good for the game if the promoted teams keep getting relegated straight away |

This is a difficult one for the clubs concerned. They can’t even tell spend big on average players on inflated wages on the hope they stay up. It would make better sense to carry on playing the same football that got them promoted with the same players. If they stay up great they can build from there. If they go back down they will be financially stable not having mortgaging their future.

I think that they need to look long and hard at whatever Brighton and Bournemouth did in order to successfully transition into genuine Premier League sides without accumulating debt.
I don’t know what it was that they did, but it was clearly successful. Much ‘bigger’ clubs have tried and failed.

They accumulate massive debt but are bankrolled by wealthy owners.
They got away with not breaching PSR last time because they were allowed a huge debt write-off because it was part of a takeover deal. Amongst the many things that annoy me about the Premier League, the plucky little Bournemouth story is one of them. They are where they are because they have had and have exceptionally wealthy owners. |

Bournemouth owners wrote off 70mil in debt to avoid psr being broken this season.
Chelsea have mastered the art of loopholes so they can overspend. Just sold their ladies team to a subsidiary company for just enough to evade psr. I read them a while ago so may not be accurate. Brighton are not in debt mainly thanks to Chelsea overspending 😂 |

You’re certainly right about Chelsea. What they’re doing, selling assets to another company albeit owned by the same people, isn’t against the rules and I’m surprised more clubs don’t do it
However, it isn’t sustainable long term as a club only have finite assets. It has been reported that if Chelsea fail to get Champions League football and the riches that go with it then they could soon be in trouble with PSR or whatever replaces it |

We, Burnley, had a good run in the premiership under Sean Dyche, even qualifying for Europe. Sadly, after that season there was little investment, our owners seemed content to make their profit and I think Dyche lost interest.
We then had new owners, Dyche was sacked and we were relegated. Then came the greatest season of football I’d watched in 50 years. The US owners invested heavily and we had Vincent Kompany as manager, promotion at the first attempt was easy. As someone said, we were dreadful in our first season back. We had a good squad, some said VK was too stubborn to change the team or the style we played. Fans lost any enthusiasm, players lost confidence and looked unhappy and to no one’s surprise we were relegated. Vincent left us for Bayern and in came Scotty Parker. Following our first 2 games over half the playing squad was sold and we started again, there has been a big improvement over the second half of the season and although we may be ‘boring Burnley’ our undefeated and clean sheet records speak for themselves. Promoted and currently top, it’s likely Leeds, with a superior goal difference will be champions. What do we need to do to stay up - we’ve had some investment, it’s never going to be on a par with the big 6, we have a good young squad with some experience. There’s room for improvement, as ever. I hope we can keep the heart of the team together, build on this and get more than a sprinkling of luck to go with the skill and enthusiasm. Overall, there needs to be changes in the financial structuring of football to allow some of the smaller teams to break through. Not sure how that will happen but for this weekend, I’m happy Burnley are back. |

Stating the obvious but they have to be better than a current premier league team, assuming the 2 that come up with you fail.
The trouble is the gulf is now so great that looking at the table who would a newly promoted side fancy finishing above? West Ham are currently 17th but 15 points above 18th, then Spurs, Man Utd, Everton and Wolves who were in danger before they won 6 on the bounce. Then come the ones that are possibles, Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth, Fulham and Palace, but they have twice as many points as Ipswich. So I guess I don't know, however over my 50+ years of watching football I have seen all but 3 of the current PL relegated, so there is always hope and that's what keeps us going back.
