Tello offer a US e-SIM with wifi calling. You can set it up and activate in the UK over wifi (without first having to connect to a US cell network) and it only costs $5 to per month on the cheapest plan to keep active. There is no commitment so you can change plan any time you like, so for example keep the minimum $5 every month you’re in the UK but then add a larger data plan for months when you will be in the US.

You can also make calls over wifi from the UK to the US and other countries as plans include free minutes (you dont need a VPN for wifi calling and Tello allow you to set the account up with a UK billing address and credit card).
