Hearing aids - do I really need to spend £4k

Hi all,

So the audiologist says that I have mild/early moderate hearing issues. Nothing terrible, but the family moan that I have the TV a little loud, and I sometimes struggle to tune into conversations in busy environments.

He thought I'd be 50/50 about getting benefit from the options that he has. They are all around the £3-4k mark.

I've tried a couple of pairs, and whilst they do improve things, I'm just not convinced that they improve things by 4k!

Clearly the Facebook algorithms worth their magic when I discuss it, and I'm constantly seeing alternatives on there for £70-200.

Has anyone tried any of the 'cheaper' options, and are they worth taking a punt on?

It's not that I won't spend 4k, but I can think of other things I'd rather it go on at this point. I've no doubt I will end up doing so in due course, but can I find a better priced solution for a couple of years?

Any words of wisdom from The Dibb collective?

Cheers

My BIL has his via NHS. I dont believe there is any cost.

It's very discreet and sits on the back of his ear.

Have you gone private or via your GP?

This was private. Not sure it is bad enough to warrant costing the NHS if I'm honest.

I need hearing aids but I don’t wear them, I manage pretty well without them but do lip read so phone calls are a no no. I can’t stand anything on or in my ears at all, I can’t wear AirPods or anything. For listening to music I use bone conduction earphones and when watching TV I do have it loud and lip read but I don’t watch that much to be fair.
It was quite funny today because I did a aqua aerobics class, there only space was right at the back, I didn’t have my glasses on so couldn’t see the instructor and couldn’t hear her either, I couldn’t see what the other ladies were doing because it’s under water so I was just jumping around like a crazy woman 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Have you looked at the newest generation apple EarPods? is that their name? they have hearing aids incorporated, my DH has NHS hearing aids but treated himself to the apple ones and he’s quite impressed, they were £250 when you get them you log into do a hearing test and it sets them up based on your hearing, he said it was very similar to what the NHS did, might be worth looking at them x

DH has had a more expensive pair a while back - his mum paid. He needed new ones so he bought some in Specsavers which seem ok and cost about half what his other ones cost.

My dad got his NHS hearing aids from Boots. He was referred by his GP.

Boots were very good and recommended he had the NHS aids first and could upgrade later on if he needed something better.

My step mum, and uncle, both have hearing aids from Specsavers. Free on the NHS. They're great, and connect to the TV and their mobile phones. I'd definitely try see if you can get them from elsewhere... 👂 📣

Not tried them but Apple AirPods Pro 2 with iPhone gives you a medical grade hearing aid? Might be worth checking reviews.
Also NHS ones are excellent.

Im going to go against the grain and say you get what you pay for.

My friend is currently training to be an audiologist and says the quality of the hearing aids they provide far outweigh anything offered by the NHS - the technology is far more advanced - therefore you pay for it!

If its something that will greatly enhance the quality of your life then can you put a price on it?
