Where to stay for Grand Canyon

I know no-one has posted on this topic in some 2 months but I have stayed many a time in the town of Williams, some 60 miles south of the South Rim. I know that's roughly an hour's drive, albeit on a very scenic straight highway, but the town gives many, affordable lodging options along with countless restaurants, stores and a big Safeway food mart. If you don't mind the drive, it can be an efficient use of money instead of the 'captive market' at the rim.

Thanks for this reply, we did an escorted tour of the west coast 17 years ago and it was Williams we stayed then for the Grand Canyon but i couldn’t really remember how convenient it was so that’s good to hear and I’ll definitely look at it again😀

DW and I stayed in Williams during our trip in 2017. We used it as a base to explore the region other than just the Grand Canyon and it worked well. Lots of places to eat and drink however we arrived late on our first night and chose the Historic Brewing Company that was right next door to our hotel, it was so good we went again the next night (an amazing satirical beer flight)
Our hotel The Red Garter Inn was great, the lady that ran it was amazing and gave us lots of things to do and see we would never have found on our own, including taking the long way round to get to the Grand Canyon that had us stopping at other canyons, painted desert and a Native American trading post before coming in to GC from the east. Breakfast was included each day at the attached Grand Canyon Coffee and Cafe which was fab.

I'd look at Williams for a night after a GC visit where it gets you on the road for where else you are going. It's not really a location if you want to be in the park for dawn or dusk.

There is plenty of well priced accomodation and eateries in Tuyasan which is much closer but outside the park.
