For the vast majority of people there is no need to pay for cloud storage for most peoples needs.

Google, Apple, Microsoft (Onedrive), Box, Dropbox etc etc all do free tiers of storage which would suffice for most people's essential content.

However, as Bev (sort of) mentioned earlier, please don't store everything in one place - including cloud storage. Storing things in the cloud is great until you find you're somewhere without internet access, or you have problems with your internet connection, or the storage company starts charging huge amounts, or (worst case) goes bust.

Cloud storage, storage on an external hard drive, and storage of some files on your laptop/tablet/device is the way to go.

Many of these have fairly limited amounts of free storage. For Apple, OneDrive, Amazon it's just 5GB. For DropBox it's just 2GB. Box it's 10GB. That's ok for a while, but isn't a huge amount if you have lots of photos, documents, etc. I don't think many of us could manage with just 5GB of storage - I know I can't with Apple's iCloud.

And the problem with any free cloud solutions is that you never know when the company will start charging to use it.

Yes of course a bit of a mix for all eventualities. I tend to use cloud for everything (as in back everything up, too lazy to sort out!), then just have important things backed up onto hardware that I really wouldn't want to lose. I don't worry about costs too much as it's easy to migrate (I use two cloud systems currently). I don't store anything on devices mostly for security reasons, certainly not at work.

(I work in information security and worked in digital preservation prior to that so it's a topic that interests me!)

For work I'm not allowed to store anything on an external device. It all gets stored on the company network.

For home stuff, I have some stored on iCloud (because I use Apple phones/iPad), some on DropBox, some on Flickr, but the majority on two laptops and an external hard drive.
