I, Daniel Blake

anyone watch this over the weekend

Bleak dosnt come close to describing this, whilst i'm sure this portrays the very worst case that could happen when caught up in the red tape of claiming various benefits , i assume its based on real events...

the food bank scene was tragic, people in 21st century Great Britain with no option than to Q up for free hand outs/food...

that food bank is a real one in that very location, they collect food outside St James' Park every Newcastle home game...

I have been waiting for this to come to tv for ages, and I missed it. Do you remember what channel it was on so I can get it on catch up?

I’m expecting this to be hard to watch, but it sounds a must watch film. I don’t think living from food banks etc is that extreme in the UK sadly, I volunteer as a CAB adviser and it’s sadly shocking how many food vouchers are needed desperately by our clients. For many, it is the only way they can feed themselves and their children.

was on bbc2 its on iplayer for 30 days

bbc/iplayer/episod...i-daniel-blake

the food bank scene was harrowing, the ladies who worked/volunteered there were beyond nice to the 'shoppers' as they called them, must be so humiliating...

I have been in the food bank as an adviser offering advice on benefits etc if anyone needs it when they visit the bank. The volunteers there are really nice, offering tea and biscuits and a chat as well as providing much needed supplies.

But many people who I see in my CAB office turn down the food voucher when I offer it. Even though they really need it, they are too embarrassed to visit the bank and are worried that someone they know will see them etc. It’s a terrible situation to be in

Really glad I saw this thread as in 2016 I was visiting Switzerland and we took the train to Locarno for the day and didn't realise that the International Film Festival was on and one of the films being promoted was I, Daniel Blake. We were sitting having a pizza at a cafe near the stage and were happily chatting away over a bottle of wine when a voice chirrped up - what's another Geordie doing here? It was Dave Johns who was the main character in the film - he came to sit with us and we had a great chat - he's so down to earth.

I too thought the food bank scene harrowing in many ways - I know which one it is and I actually grew up not very far from there many, many years ago. Thankfully in those days it wasn't as bad but the area eventually left a lot to be desired.
