We did a 3 week road trip around Texas last September and loved it. We started off in Sugarland, Houston then went to Galveston, San Antonio and Austin, then back to Houston. We did about 1000 miles in our rental car. The driving around Houston was insane but once on the open road it was fine.
Highlights were - San Antonio (riverwalk, and the Alamo), Austin (the area we stayed in was Tarrytown, a very upmarket residential area but minutes from downtown, and enjoyed seeing the bats at Congress bridge), and Sugarland area was pretty, easy to get around, staying in Hyatt place as it was a great hotel. Not fond of Galveston but the days we had there were okay and the Tanger Premium Outlet we passed (and shopped in) were excellent.
If we lived in Texas, I would definitely choose Austin.

Wow, it sounds like you had a brilliant trip. we are really looking forward to Austin and also San Antonio, the river walk looks beautiful. It seems that Texas really does capture people’s hearts! thanks for you tips
