Cruise newbie - insurance
Total cruise virgin here
We’ve booked a 3 night cruise on the Disney Dream for Sept 2020 before we head to WDW. Having never cruised before I was wondering if there are any special requirements I need to ensure we have cover for? We always make sure we have a high medical cover allowance and have no pre-existing conditions. I’m guessing it’s vital to have cover for travel disruption as the cruise is at the beginning of the trip. Don’t want a delayed flight meaning we miss the boat (or playing catch up in a row boat ) Any advice appreciated or suggestions of particular insurers we could use if there are specialist elements we need. TIA

Just been looking at some quotes on a comparison site and getting a good price with Economy Cover.com (Blue Insurance Ltd). Seems to cover everything we need but I’ve never heard of them? The site says they were only established in 2018 but they have a 5 star Defaqto rating.
Has anyone used them? Any experience of having had to claim?

Just make sure you have cruise cover on your insurance as well as world wide cover. Ensure your covered for £10 million or more.

Thanks. Economycover.com seems to have everything we need including all cruise related eventualities incl airlifting if necessary and missed departure plus £20m medical cover etc. Just bothers me that I’d never heard of them and they’re fairly new (although with a good Defaqto rating, they must be pretty good). I think my other problem is a lot of insurers aren’t quoting this far out (more than 12 months) so I’m not seeing the whole picture.
Guess I’ll have to decide whether to go for this one or wait a few more months and see if anyone I’ve heard of quotes...

So, when we buy our insurance, we make sure we have the following:
1. Medivac off of ship 2. Hotel accommodation for spouse/family if one person in hospital 3. Cabin confinement due to illness 4. Missed ports or excursions (weather/illness) There are a few other things, but these 4 are my most important ones. Joa

Thanks Joa. I think the policy I found with Economycover.com had all of those. Something is still holding me back though... There are some mixed reviews out there on them (not that I can find many) and I think I’d be happier using a company I’d heard of before. Much as I like to get insurance in place as soon as possible, most companies just aren’t quoting this far out. I think I might just leave it until September and get more quotes now I know what I need in the way of extra cruise related cover.
So much to learn about cruises...

Does anyone use the Nationwide Flex + account travel Insurance . Being of a certain age with pre existing medical conditions most insurance companies want huge amounts to cover us (my wife and me) ie; saga were talking over £700. With Nationwide I worked out that with the monthly payment for the account and the extra insurance for Pre conditions it will come to about £368 and this covers everything and cruises as well I believe for 12 months on a monthly basis. Plus you get 3% interest on amounts up to 2500 in the account so that then saves £75 so the true cost is around £295 which seems pretty good to me. I just wondered how well they pay out if anyone has used them.

Thankfully haven't had to use them for anything medical. Our only experience of having to claim was when we were delayed by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. We managed to arrange an extra nights accommodation using DVC points in our Beach Club 2 bed villa. Nothing found in their T&C re timeshare so was pleasantly surprised by their willingness to consider a claim. They paid out what it would have cost us if we had paid rack rate which was approx $1200.

For normal insurance, banks are ok, but if you're cruising, you should really have add on to ensure you are adequately covered.
