Returning car at end of holiday
Anybody got advice on how long it takes to return the car at the airport? What checks do they do etc?

If it's Alamo, about 2 minutes! You pull into the garage, by the time you've unloaded your cases one of the many attendants will have come over and checked your mileage, fuel and - that's it! Good to go

Ensure you take, read, and keep the sign off sheet, it should state zero to pay. If you buy the fuel option I'm sure Andy, MrT, or others, will advise if a garage close out sheet shows the estimated fuel figure. I always return any hire with a full tank so my sign off sheets are zero due. I don't trust any car hire suppliers not to apply charges against my cc, so I hold all paperwork/fuel/toll receipts for a few month before destroying.

As above, about 2 minutes, very slick process.
My experiences are you pull up where indicated by the Guys with the illuminated wands (dark garage) By the time we are out of the car they have swiped the bar code and within seconds they are in the car checking the mileage and fuel level. They produce the receipt from their hand held machines and thats it. My receipt is normally between $35 and $45 for fuel. This is where you have to be on the ball. Any issues head over to the desks in the terminal to sort it out. I have been to see the Manager ref electrical issues on the car. All I wanted was a free tank of fuel for my next rental and nothing else. I got it.

Thanks MrT, I'm only see a $0 sign off sheet, knew you'd know if the sheet shows estimated fuel charge

You will pull up in a lane.
A person with a scanner will come and scan a barcode. They will switch engine and take mileage. They may have a very cursory look at the bodywork (and I mean cursory). They may give you a receipt (depending on hire company, ERAC didn't give me any paper at any time). Basically it is the time it takes to unload. |
