In 2017, I took my 10 and 6 year old (girls) to Disney - we were there 14 nights and 'just' did Disney - we had a fairly hectic schedule (although did the pool every day and each water park once) and still didn't see/do it all.
I'm planning to take them again next year and we're going to do Disney (6 nights onsite and a week in a villa) and Universal. They'd love, I'm sure, to do Discovery Cove or Seaworld, but I can't justify the extra spend on the tickets when I know it'd be squeezing them in and doing neither justice. Harry Potter fans would love Universal, that's why I'm going there next year - we did Universal in 2014 but they didn't/wouldn't go on a lot of the rides, then. |

For a big HP fan, one day will not be enough for Universal in August and definitely not if you don't have express passes. I think two days would be just about ok but I would still want fast passes, maybe three days without express passes.
At Disney, I would probably spend equal amounts of time at Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios but less time at Epcot. I don't tend too do a park a day, we would generally do two or three parks a day and I would probably do the equivalent of two half days at Epcot. I also wouldn't bother with Discovery Cove, Sea World etc, you will already be spending an absolute fortune on Universal and Disney tickets, I would stick with that, there is more than enough to keep you occupied. |

My son is a huge HP fan but I can't justify the expense of Universal so once again we are just doing Disney. There is so much to do, more than enough to fill up 14 days.

If you can afford to do Universal then do it! Harry Potter is incredible. I would book a night at one of their hotels (we stayed a night at the Royal Pacific and it was only a short boat ride to the parks). It gave us early entry to HP and Express passes. Really is worth it especially for your HP fan!
