Panasonic Smart Tv and external HDD

Over the past week or two my tv has been turning itself off for no reason, not just on live tv but when I've been using itv player too. Last night I noticed a little message at the top of the screen before it went blank and it said "HDD - pause", I pulled out the connection to the HDD and the tv came straight back on. This is the second drive I've had, the first one got very hot and stopped working. I bought this one in December so it is not old. Any suggestions as I do want one as I like to use the live pause and rewind, for recordings I have an old dependable pvr?
