Probate if you do it yourself is £215 and if the Estate is straightforward which it is in your case then it's very easy to do. I have done it many times sadly.

Make sure though you apply for quite a few copies of the Probate which are only £1.50p each. they cost quite a bit more if you ask for extra copies later on.

What the Post office has done is standard practice as they are just ensuring that Dad is the beneficiary. Better to be safe than sorry.

However to freeze the interest is somewhat mercenary in my view but probably in their T & C's.
Maybe not relevant to this post, but may help others in the future who are reading this... also get multiple copies of death certificates if you can. I think we got 6 from memory. Most places want original copies and the more you have, the easier it is to get everything sent out and sorted.

OP, hope you manage to get things organised x

Very wise words. Extra copies later on cost a lot more and take for EVER to be prepared as I know to my cost ref a death I didn't do the registration for.

Ooh that's good, I googled probate and it said 9 - 12 months ! 8 days is a bit more realistic seen as it's only the one bank that's asking.
Thank you x

Thank you and yes a good bit of advice as we were sending death certificates all over the place.
I would also say, don't rely on the "tell us once" service to do what it says. We found that the our Council tax are informed via this service, but don't action anything until you make a call ...so the point of them being involved in the "tell us once" service is what exactly? My mum passed away mid December and the council still haven't sent a new bill showing the 25% single occupant reduction for my dad. We were told this by the community nurse, who ended up phoning them on our behalf.
All in all, it's a nightmare really, sorting all this out whilst grieving

We did probate ourselves for Mum and it was sorted no problem within a few weeks. She had her flat and money in the bank, a simple estate.

Mum’s was about the same. I handled it mostly and never had any problems or stress with it. This was 2016, don’t know if it’s changed drastically since.

Not current intel

My Father passed last April and we are still going through probate.

Currently it takes months and a lot of patience. Don’t believe stories of “how easy it was years ago” it isn’t easy at the moment or timely

Patience is a virtue

I’m sorry you are having a delay.

My intel is up to date. My Mother in Law died in August last year. Probate done in 8 weeks flat. That was for a Widow who was a home owner and had Bank Accounts.

Probate is very easy on a straightforward estate.

What do you mean by not current intel?

I am sorry for your loss

My reply was very explicit and I don’t feel the need to go into details of my Fathers death etc with you !

End Ex !

I think it must very much depend on the area and time of year.
We tried to buy a house off the son of a local neighbour. Simple estate, 2 children completely friendly and in agreement to share everything, house owner, no finance.
It’s been a year and still going
