Mobile Esta not lasting 2 years

My friend has recently done her esta ( last month) it's been approved but it runs out in Sept 2021 , 4 months sort of the 2 years ... any ideas why? We haven't done ours yet but have always had a full 2 years

My daughters and grandson ps were the same. We got the, last February but they ran out last month as Their passports expired

Passport was the first thing that springs to my mind too. I did ours as a group and was perplexed about this myself, as my sons ran out on a different date to everyone else... soon realised it was his passport renewal date!
