According to Pprune, 'Mayday declared as they had lost engines '.

Saw it on the news last night, it crashed into a residential area - looked like a scene from hell. Those poor souls.

Yes very sad news, especially as many of the passengers would have been returning home for the Eid celebrations

Very sad and a bit of an odd one. What we know already is that it had done a go around (ie was due to land and then aborted) having coming in far too high above the glide slope and trying to correct for that by pointing the nose down, meaning it was then going too fast when it hit the runway. Both engines damaged by the impact before then lifting for the go around. Engines lost shortly after that with no chance of a second attempt.

What’s not clear is why they came in so high in the first place. ATC called out their height during approach (without going so far as to say ‘you’re too high’) and nothing from the pilots to indicate they had a problem until the go around.
