Hi - In terms of places I'd pick Yosemite but if that would mean you don't do the PCH drive, then I'd reverse that and say that you should try and include the drive down PCH if you can - it's not obligatory to stay in Monterey as part of that.

If you choose Yosemite then try and stay in the park if you can - saves the potential hassle of a drive in, queuing to get into the park and then dealing with the traffic in the valley (I've seen gridlock there as bad as LA!).

With a bit of juggling you could probably include both by taking a day off two of SF/Anaheim/San Diego.

Whichever you choose will be great!

I also would do both and reduce LA . We did the exact same trip with 3 kids and Yosemite and PCH were highlights. Didn’t enjoy LA.

As others have said didn't like LA at all, so perhaps cut to one night. Nice to see Hollywood sign and La Brea Tar Pits were surprisingly good, but nothing else, its all a bit run down and seedy. Definitely do not miss Yosemite it is truly awesome. We did Anaheim (Disney and Universal fix), Yosemite, San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica. Highlights were Yosemite and Santa Barbara (preferred this over Monterey). The Pacific Coast Highway is very beautiful and nice to drive if you can rejig your nights elsewhere. Have a great trip.

Thanks for everyone’s replies, guess it’s an overwhelming majority for Yosemite or doing both. After reading a few trip reports (and trying to keep driving times to 3/4 hours a day) we have revised our plan to look something like this:

San Francisco (4 nights)
Yosemite (3 nights)
Monterey (2 nights)
Pismo Beach area (1 night)
Santa Barbara (2 nights)
Burbank (1 nights)
San Diego (5 nights)
Anaheim (3 nights) 2 days at Disney finish off the holiday
Fly home LAX

Reduced Disney and L.A. by a night each and added on 2 nights at Santa Barbara. We will give Universal theme park in LA a miss having been to the Orlando parks a couple of times, which would save us the money to do an extra night on the PCH.

Looks perfect! I too wouldn't be able to choose between Yosemite and Monterey, we loved them both. Have a fab time

Sounds great. We didn’t do Universal either. I know a bit different to Orlando but one of the sacrifices we made to ensure more time elsewhere or to get other things done... like WB Studio Tour which would recommend whilst in Burbank!
